Red, lightly felted mitts

Red, lightly felted mitts

I knit these mitts from the pattern in the kids' knitting book Knitting (Kids Can Do It) by Judy Ann Sadler. It's a very basic 2-needle pattern that has only two thumb-gusset increases. I used M1 instead of the knit into front & back of stitch that the book teaches.

Used Patons Classic Merino in red, with the needle sizes recommended in the pattern (3.25mm for ribbing, 4.5mm for rest). The thumb turned out too long - it was adult sized when finished, even though the mitts were not. I'd recommend doing 2 - 4 rows less than the patterns states.

The hand part of the mitten I knit as directed, then felted it by rubbing that portion together between my palms in a sink full of tepid water and Eucalan. This fulled the mitt while leaving the ribbing un-felted. Rolled them in a towel to remove excess water and hung them to dry! They now fit my six year old, and are quite a bit thicker and warmer than before felting.
