These mittens are size 6-9 months. They are thumbless! I used wool because the little boy I knit these for likes to suck on his mitts and wool stays warm even when wet, which comes in handy.
Materials:
1 skein DK weight machine washable wool (to be used double-stranded).
I used Patons Country Garden DK, which is now discontinued.
Set of four 4.5mm double pointed needles
Wool needle
Directions:
Loosely cast on 18 stitches over 3 needles (6 per needle)
Join in the round and knit 1x1 rib (K1, P1) for 10 rounds.
Increase Round:
*Knit 2, Knit into front and back of stitch* repeat around - 24 sts (8 each needle)
Knit straight for 2.5" (measured above ribbing)
Decreases:
Round 1: *K1, SSK, K6, K2tog, K1* twice
Round 2: Knit
Round 3: *K1, SSK, K4, K2tog, K1* twice
Round 4: Knit
Round 5: *K1, SSK, K2, K2tog, K1* twice (you will have to move your stitches around on your needles to get the decrease pairs together)
Round 6: Knit
Round 7: *K1, SSK, K2tog, K1* twice
You should have 8 stitches left. I put 4 on each of two needles and grafted the top together using the Kitchener stitch, which I still find confusing as heck but can manage given enough time and good visual directions!
You could also just draw the tail through the remaining stitches and pull tightly.
Weave in your ends.
Knit another one!
Crochet a long chain with one strand of the wool to use as a mitten string if you wish. Embellish with embroidery or i-cord or whatever you like.
