That starfish used up way less yarn than I thought it would, so I'm continuing to make baby things from the rest of the ball. Last week I knit up some little anti-scratch mitts. They are so tiny and sweet! I just need a baby to put them in -- there are a couple of prospects between work and family friends, so I hope to gift them soon. They used maybe 10-12 grams of yarn, and knit up super quickly. Pattern is below.
Some quick baby mittens using cotton fingering weight sock yarn.
Size: newborn
Yarn: Any fingering weight sock yarn (I used Schoeller Esslinger Fortissima Cotton)
Needles: 2.5 mm & 3 mm double points
On smaller needles, cast on 32 stitches.
Join in the round and knit 1x1 rib for 6 cm (2 1/4", about 25 rounds)
Change to larger needles and knit 24 rounds of plain stockinette.
Start decreases as follows:
Round 2: Knit
Round 3: *Knit 5, K2tog* four times (24 sts)
Round 4: Knit
Round 5: *Knit 4, K2tog* four times (20 sts)
Round 6: *Knit 3, K2tog* four times (16 sts)
Round 7: *Knit 2, K2tog* four times (12 sts)
Round 8: *Knit 1, K2tog* four times (8 sts)
Cut yarn and draw tail through remaining 8 sts to close the top of the mitten. Weave in yarn ends. Knit second mitten!
